Weigh in Wednesday

Weigh in Wednesday is a weekly meme started by Lauren at Epilogue Review, and this week's topic is Peeta vs. Gale.

This is an easy one for me...I was a fan of Peeta from the very beginning, because I never felt like I got to know Gale enough in the first book to really like him.  Peeta, on the other hand, was incredibly likable from that very first anecdote about him giving the bread to Katniss.  By the third book, I feel like the author was "team Peeta" as well--she seemed to subtly cast Gale in a more unflattering light--so I continued to prefer Peeta up to the very end.

  1. I do feel like the author was pushing team Peeta, especially since Gale never really expressed his feelings for Katness. This was an easy choice for me..

  2. Is it weird that this exact story - the one with the bread - influenced my opinion just the other way round? I always felt like Peeta was...in a way... not egoistic enough. I know how this sounds, but I like how Gayle decides so rationally on what's important to stay alive. I mean he lives to protect the ones he loves while Peeta - at least to me - always seemed to be willing to die for Katniss but did not much else to make her life easier for her. I hope you kind of get my point here...

    1. That makes perfect sense! In a way, Peeta is almost too *good," and I can see how that would make him a somewhat unrealistic character, or at least less likable. I usually don't like overly *good* characters, but for some reason it didn't bother me with Peeta--although it did bother me with Prim, especially by the third book. She was painted as such an angel that I never quite believed she was real.

    2. I think Prim was very overprotected and naive. I know Katniss didn't want her sister to have to carry the responsiblity that Katniss had to take on once their father died and their mother was too depressed to keep living for them. I would've done the same for my sister had I been in Katniss's shoes. I think Prim was more naive than angelic. :)

    3. Yes, that's true! For me personally, I think I was a little irritated by the time I got to Mockingjay b/c Prim seemed to function more as a symbol/plot and emotional catalyst than a real person...but again that was just my read.

  3. I agree that the author was Team Peeta all the way. The more postings I read, the more I'm sure I wasn't the only one who felt Gale was kind of jerky towards Katniss in Mockingjay.
