Weigh in Wednesday

Weigh in Wednesday is a weekly meme started by Lauren at Epilogue Review, and this week's topic is YA VS ADULT FICTION.

While there are a few adult authors I really like, including Alice Hoffman (who's also written a few YAs!) and Eowyn Ivey, I'd have to say that overall I gravitate toward YA fiction.  YA has always been the first section I browse in the bookstore or library, and most of my favorite books are YA or children's.  I also like the variety and innovation in YA.  However, lately I've noticed YA becoming more trend-based and commercial, and I'm not a huge fan of that...especially when it seems publishers are focusing on books that will translate into major movies.  I actually prefer the kind of quiet, quirky stories that wouldn't make great movies, because...if I wanted to watch a movie, I'd watch a movie, not read a book!  I hope that YA becomes less trend-based and continues to allow innovation in the future, but no matter what, I think I'll always love YA.

  1. Yeah, you're right, I didn't thought of that, they all look/sound the same lately, & I don't think that will stop soon, and if I wanted to watch a movie - I'll watch one ;)

Most of my favs YA are actually those that haven't been hyped about so much - those that read them, loved them, but the other ones have definitely missed out on.

  2. A lot of my favorite YAs are older books, and I sometimes think if they were from an unknown author trying to get published today, they wouldn't get bought by major publishers...like Francesca Lia Block's Weetzie Bat books. They're these strange, lovely, quirky little books that definitely aren't as well known as they should be.

  3. Being a teen, I pretty much only read YA novels. I occasionally read some adult fiction, but only if it's by authors that I know, and even then it's contemporary and clean, like Meg Cabot's adult books and some of Sophie Kinsella's books. But I think I'll always stick to YA :) Great post and I'm a new follower!

  4. Oh, I missed that week's! But this was definitely an interesting topic to discuss. You are so right about the innovation of YA books! There's just so much that's open to such a vast array of possibilities!!! Great answer!

By the way, I love the green of your blog *o* It's very soothing to look at!

  5. Thanks for liking the green! I actually know very little about blog design and had my dad do it for me, which is why I chose not to put up my own post for this WIW! (Also, I'm having the most insanely busy week ever, but that's neither here nor there...)
